Low sun through the cork oaks at dawn

About ReBurn // Sobre o ReBurn

An burn site like no other. We keep it that way.

A mountain, a lake and a cork forest that has taken us in three times already. This page has everything you need to know. The land, how to get there, safety and consent stuff, and what the hell is going on.

The land

A lake, a cork forest, a kitchen, and not much phone signal.

The site sits in a shallow valley of cork oaks with a lake at the bottom of it. Mist fills the valley overnight and burns off by nine. There are no neighbours within earshot, so no one to hear us howl at the moon.

This land is special. We keep it that way. The landowners join, as part of the family.

We do not publish the location. Members who are driving get the address by message once their membership is confirmed.

Leave no trace

One of the reasons we keep being invited back, is we keep the land spotless. No. MOOP. Ever.

That is not luck, it is the line-walk. Everybody takes a shift caring for the ground, including you. There is even a growing move to build infrastructure and leave the land better than we found it, and we are entirely for it.

Getting there

Three legs, one of them off-road.

  1. 01

    Get to Faro

Fly or train before mid-afternoon on your arrival day if you can so we've got time to get you before dark!

  2. 02

    Shuttle or taxi

Mini-buses run from the airport for a few euros a head. A taxi to the meeting point is around €60.

  3. 03

    Six kilometres of track

A proper off-road track. Campers/cars can just manage it, but you need some confidence to do it. Daylight only.

On site

All of it built by us, every year

The lake and valley in spring, seen from the ridge above camp

Communal kitchen

One big main meal a day, with vegan / gf always available: cereal and coffee in the morning, leftovers and snacks for lunch.

Six compost loos

Four standing loos. Solids only, and a bucket of sawdust each. The landowners look after this for us and we love them.

Outdoor showers

Cold as standard. Fire-heated if the build crew get ambitious, which we usually do. There's also fire baths. They're sick.

The bar

We'll lay on some communal booze, but always accept donations! Bring a cup so you can be gifted a drink.

The lake

Swim with a friend, in daylight, sober. It is colder than you may have decided it is, but that's what makes it great.

(almost) Zero power

Off grid. There's a generator and solar, but it's limited. Bring a power bank, a head torch, and battery fairy lights.

Safety & consent

If it is not a heck yes, it is a no.

Consent is the eleventh principle and the one holding up the other ten. None of us were taught it properly. So we keep learning it here, out loud, every year.

Ask, every time

A yes to one thing is not a yes to the next thing, and a yes yesterday is not a yes tonight. Ask again. It is not unsexy, it is the opposite.

Substances change the answer

Someone too far gone cannot give consent. If you are unsure, the answer is no and the correct move is a blanket and a cup of tea.

Photography

Ask before you shoot and ask again before you post. Nudity is welcome here and the internet is not invited.

Rangers and welfare

Sober rangers walk the site around the clock. The welfare tent is open all night, staffed, warm, and never a big deal to walk into.

First aid

Trained first aiders on site, plus a few medics who came for the party but will step in. Nearest hospital is roughly an hour away.

Reporting something

Tell any ranger, any organiser, or email us afterwards. We will listen, we will act, and we will not make you repeat it to six people.

Disclaimer // Non-negotiable

This is a private event, and the organisers reserve the right to refuse entry without giving a reason.

ReBurn is a small gathering in a remote place with no hospital nearby. Keeping everyone safe means we occasionally have to make a judgement call, and we may make it without explaining ourselves. Buying a membership secures a prospective place, not a right of entry: we can refund and refuse. This has been rare. It will stay rare. It stays on the table.

No plus ones. Everybody joins for themselves and reads the principles.

Burning Man is the big one. There are hundreds of regional burns around the world running on the same eleven principles and the same ethos, at a fraction of the size. ReBurn is one of the small ones.
